Jama Masjid in Jaunpur
The biggest of all the mosques found in Jaunpur, Jama Masjid or Jama Mosque or Jami Masjid or Bari Masjid, was constructed in the 15th century. The mosque stands evident to the fall of the Sharqi Dynasty. The construction of the Masjid was commenced by the Sharqi ruler, Ibrahim Shah. The construction took place in several phases and was concluded by the last Sharqi ruler, Hussain Shah.

The most distinctive feature of the mosque is that it is mounted on a six-feet high plinth, having a flight of twenty-seven long stairs leading to the main entrance of the mosque. The entrance gate is pylon-shaped and has double arches, which gives it a magnificent view.Originally built with entrance gates on all the four sides of the premises, the eastern gate is said to be destroyed at the hands of Sikandar Lodi.

The exclusive feature of the Masjid is the massive courtyard which is rectangular in shape, served as the prayer hall. The hall is lined by the tunnel vaults on all the sides with a dome of 11.4 meters diameter, covering them. The dome has small windows giving to the sunlight inside the masjid.Another feature lies in the elaborate decorations and engravings on the walls. Belonging to the Egyptian style - it includes sunflower and rose motifs, lotus motifs along with other curves - the Jama Masjid gets its name to be the most sacred place in Jaunpur.
Timings: The mosque is open for prayers until sunset. Special prayers take place on Fridays as a tradition in Islam.
